Grayson Highlands, originally named Mount Rogers State Park, was established in 1965. The community overwhelmingly supported this park, beginning with a fund-raising effort for land acquisition and continuing with the donation of items on exhibit in the visitor center.

Grayson Highlands State Park is home to two major attractions, Mt. Rogers, the highest peak in Virginia, and the Wild Ponies, a small herd of beautiful ponies that roam freely in the park. In addition to the gorgeous views, there’s numerous hiking and horseback riding trails, picnicking and camping areas, and a visitor’s center/museum.
