Batavia was an imperial Dutch port city that eventually, after two centuries of Dutch occupation, became the capital of the Dutch East Indies. The area corresponds to present-day Jakarta, Indonesia.

Avon-based Quicklee’s has sold nearly a dozen of its convenience store locations, including stores in Batavia and the Livingston County hamlet of Dalton, to Mirabito Holdings Inc. of Binghamton.

Today, Batavia is no more. This former Dutch colony in Indonesia exists only in glimmers on the streets of Jakarta. But those glimmers, however faint, tell a story of immense wealth and horrific violence. Established by the Dutch in 1619, Batavia rapidly became the heart of the Dutch East Indies.
