James Augustine Aloysius Joyce (born James Augusta Joyce; [a] 2 February 1882 – 13 January 1941) was an Irish novelist, poet, and literary critic. He contributed to the modernist movement and is regarded among the most influential and important writers of the 20th century.

James Joyce was an Irish novelist and short-story writer noted for his experimental use of language and exploration of new literary methods in such works as A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916), Ulysses (1922), and Finnegans Wake (1939).

Joyce was born in Dublin on 2 February 1882 at 41 Brighton Square, Rathgar, a suburb south of Dublin. Joyce’s father was John Stanislaus Joyce and his mother was Mary Jane “May” (née Murray). He was the eldest of ten children.
