Sir Steven Runciman, one of the most acclaimed historians of the Byzantine era, was the author of many influential works, including the three-volume History of the Crusades.
Through some wonder of flight and calendar he was taken from Athos on 2 July (OS) and delivered to the Athenaeum Club on 15 July, all within one day. In secular time Steven Runciman died on 1 November 2000 and was buried at Lochmaben according to the rites of the Church of Scotland.
