Fiercely independent and wanting to remain that way, the leading citizens of Mecklenburg County drafted the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence in 1775. Gold was discovered around 1800, and Mecklenburg soon became the location for the Charlotte Mint.

The principle city of Mecklenburg County is Charlotte, founded in 1768. Today Charlotte is the largest city in the two Carolinas, but it was a small country village up to the time of the Civil War.

Introduction: Mecklenburg County’s identity is inextricably tied to Charlotte, the region’s economic engine. Given the dominance of Charlotte, however, it’s all too easy to equate Mecklenburg County’s image entirely with the Carolinas’ largest city.
