It is located along Interstate 65, about 50 miles (80 km) north of Birmingham and about 55 miles (89 km) south of Huntsville. Before the arrival of American settlers, the area that today includes Cullman was originally in the territory of the Cherokee Nation.
Located in the heart of north Alabama, Cullman County is centrally positioned on Interstate 65 between two of the state’s largest cities (Huntsville and Birmingham) and covers 743 square miles on the Cumberland Plateau.
The city was founded by European settler Colonel John G. Cullman, an immigrant from Bavaria, Germany in 1873, and even today, its German heritage is displayed in Cullman’s museums, abbey, parks and local landmarks.
