Joseph is a central figure in the story of Jesus’ birth, but he quickly takes a backseat as the Gospels continue, which may lead us to wonder what happened to him after Jesus was born, grew up, and began his earthly ministry.

Joseph’s Hebrew counterpart Yosef has remained one of the most popular Jewish names for centuries. Great figures like Rav Yosef, Rabbi Yosef Caro, and Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn have carried it, 37 and it continues to be used in Jewish communities worldwide.

We know very little about Saint Joseph, except that he was the husband of Mary and foster-father of Jesus. Scripture calls him a just man and points out a few incidences in which he showed virtuous behavior. After he and Mary found Jesus in the Temple, Saint Joseph is not mentioned again.
