Mecklenburg County plans to reopen Jail North amid overcrowding crisis at detention center

The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office plans to reopen the jail in north Charlotte due to "historic overcrowding" in the Uptown facility.

Inmates with medical conditions in the Mecklenburg County jail have reported that they're forced to sleep on the floor, among other issues.

As of Monday, May 18, the Mecklenburg County Jail housed 2,084 inmates, well over the number the jail was built for, which is about 1,700.

The Mecklenburg Sheriff's Office said this week it will reopen the former juvenile jail to alleviate overcrowding at the uptown county jail.
