In 1848, Jose Maria Amador, with several Native Americans, established a successful gold mining camp near the present town of Amador City. In Spanish, the word amador means "one who loves".

Nestled in the Sierra Nevada Foothills, Amador City and its neighbors are celebrated for its scenic views, wine tasting, and rich Gold Rush history. Featuring a variety of local goods and historical sites around every corner, there’s no shortage of places to explore in & around Amador City.

Here at Lake Amador we have a large campground consisting of 113 sites located on a 100 acre portion of the facility that is surrounded by shade giving Oaks. Most campsites have running potable water, some have electricity and many sites are located on the waters edge when the lake is full.

Amador County has so much to see and do! From parades to parties, castle tours, concerts and plays to full moon snowshoe treks, you can find all of Amador’s exciting events as well as chamber meetings and mixers on our calendar.

Amador was the nickname of Amadeo Pietro Giannini, founder of the Bank of Italy and visionary behind the iconic space we are privileged to occupy. A maverick even by today’s standards, he became legendary for his role in rebuilding San Francisco after the devastating earthquake of 1906.
