Chelsea Building Products and ARCO Pittsburgh broke ground on a project to build a 228,000-square-foot manufacturing facility at Commerce Crossing at Westmoreland yesterday morning, marking a major investment in Westmoreland County’s industrial growth.

The county was created in 1773 and named for Westmoreland, Eng. Greensburg, the county seat, is situated near Hannastown, which was the county seat for more than a decade until it was destroyed by a Seneca Indian raid in the 1780s.

William Childs Westmoreland (26 March 1914 – 18 July 2005) was a United States Army general, most notably the commander of United States forces during the Vietnam War from 1964 to 1968. He later served as Chief of Staff of the United States Army from 1968 to 1972.

William Westmoreland commanded U.S. forces in the Vietnam War from 1964 to 1968. He treated the conflict as a war of attrition, which diminished domestic support. In December 1956 he was promoted to major general; at 42 years old, he was then the youngest person holding that rank in the U.S. Army.
